Hair loss troubles and how to improve hair growth

Hair loss troubles and how to improve hair growth

Here are your essentials

for making it this far

"My hair is falling out… what should I do?" This is a very common statement: it happens to you, it happens to your neighbour, it happens to your sister… That hairbrush full of hair, the pillow in the morning, the hair tie that grips less and less each time. Trust us, we understand, and we know it's scary. Because it's happened to us too.

But before you worry too much, there's something you should know: hair loss almost never has a single cause. It can start with a hormonal issue, be triggered by a stressful period, or happen because you're not giving your follicles the nutrients they need. That's why, if hair loss is multifactorial, at Freshly we believe the answer should be too. If you want to know why it happens, what the most common causes are and, above all, what you should do, keep reading. We'll explain it all!

Why does hair fall out?

Hair loss is more common than we think, and it affects both women and men of different ages. It happens when there's an imbalance in the hair growth cycle, meaning fewer hairs are in the growth phase than in the shedding phase. These are the six most common causes:

  • Hormonal: in men, the main culprit behind hormonal hair loss is DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which acts on the hair follicles of the scalp. In women, hair loss is mainly due to a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and oestrogens, which also increases conversion to DHT (ideally, oestrogen levels should stay clearly higher). This type of hormonal hair loss often goes hand in hand with other factors such as polycystic ovary syndrome, heavier menstrual bleeding (which can worsen an iron and ferritin deficiency), thyroid issues, or the postpartum period. In both men and women, the most effective way to reduce the conversion of testosterone into DHT (caused by the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme) is to do so naturally, without hormone-based drugs, so as not to create further imbalances.

  • Stress: when cortisol (the so-called stress hormone) stays elevated for a long time, the follicle notices, shortening the growth phase (anagen) and bringing forward the shedding phase (telogen). This phenomenon is known as telogen effluvium. It's the most common form of hair loss during periods of sustained tension or change. What's more, chronic stress is often accompanied by an altered gut microbiota, adding a low-grade inflammatory component that also affects the scalp. That's why looking after your rest and stress management isn't just a matter of general wellbeing, but also a direct strategy against hair loss.

  • Circulatory: the dermal papilla is the "root" of the follicle, the point from which it receives oxygen and nutrients through scalp microcirculation. When that circulation is insufficient, the follicle is poorly nourished, hair grows thinner and less dense, and the hair cycle itself suffers. That's why stimulating local microcirculation is one of the most effective ways to reactivate a follicle that has lost vitality, without needing to act on hormones.

  • Nutritional: hair is, to a large extent, protein (specifically keratin), so it needs a constant supply of amino acids and micronutrients to regenerate. When your diet doesn't cover these needs (a lack of iron, zinc, biotin or B vitamins, for example), the body prioritises other vital functions over hair, which, after all, isn't an essential tissue for survival. The result: a poorly nourished follicle that grows weaker and falls out more easily.

  • Intestinal: the microbiota also has a say in hair health. An imbalanced gut favours low-grade systemic inflammation which, even if it starts far from the scalp, ends up reaching the follicle and speeding up its wear. This is known as the gut-skin axis: looking after your microbiota isn't just about digestion, it also affects how healthy your hair is.

  • Topical hygiene: the environment where hair is born matters just as much as what happens inside the follicle. Aggressive cleansing (with sulphates that over-dry the scalp or silicones that leave an occlusive film) disrupts the scalp's protective barrier and can encourage dandruff, itching or excess oil. These products can also disrupt the balance of the scalp microbiota, leaving the door open for certain bacteria or fungi to get out of control. The result? Irritation and local inflammation that make it harder for the follicle to grow healthily.

Besides these 6 causes, there's also what's known as seasonal shedding. But to understand it properly, you first need to know how these causes directly influence the different phases of the hair cycle. Do you know what they are? Keep reading!

What are the stages of hair growth?

Hair doesn't grow continuously: it goes through a cycle of three stages that repeats indefinitely throughout our lives. Understanding these phases helps explain why slowing down hair loss takes time.

1. Anagen (2–8 years): this is the phase when the follicle is active and hair grows. It's the longest process and the most important for forming strong, thick, healthy hair. In fact, between 80% and 90% of hair is in this phase at any given time. The longer it lasts, the longer and thicker hair can become.

2. Catagen (2–3 weeks): a brief phase, also called the transition phase, in which the follicle stops its cellular activity and gradually separates from the dermal papilla that nourishes it. This causes the hair to stop growing. Only between 1% and 2% of hair is in this phase at any given time.

3. Telogen (3–4 months): in this final phase, the hair prepares to fall out and make way for new hair, which is already growing in. As the new hair grows, it pushes out the old one until it fully sheds, starting a new hair cycle. Between 10% and 15% of hair is normally in this phase. The problem arises when that percentage spikes, meaning more hair than usual enters the shedding phase at the same time.

Now that you know the phases, you'll understand why we see more hair on the brush or in the shower in autumn. In summer, sun exposure alters this natural cycle, extending the hair's growth phase. But once that phase ends, many follicles enter the resting phase at the same time. That's why it's most noticeable in autumn.

So summer is a good time to strengthen your hair: the serum needs between 90 and 120 days to deliver its optimal results, so if you start in summer, you'll reach the autumn peak with your follicles already reinforced.

Either way, seasonal shedding shouldn't alarm you. As we've said, it's a natural part of the hair cycle. The issue arises if it drags on over time. That's when you should pay attention and listen to your body, because it's its way of telling you something else is interfering with the hair cycle.

Hair Growth & Density Treatment serum by Freshly

Anti-hair-loss treatment: no rebound effect, no hormonal disruption

If hair loss responds to several fronts at once, its solution should too. That's why the Hair Growth & Density Treatment serum doesn't rely on a single hero ingredient, but on a combination of actives that works simultaneously on three of the areas we've just covered: hormonal (Zinc PCA, next-generation Azelaic and Saw Palmetto), circulatory (Azuki Sprout, Amla and AnaGain) and stress (liposomal Melatonin and EGCG).

It also features Smart Growth Activator encapsulation technology. This is a delivery system that releases the actives directly into the hair follicle, making it up to 12 times more effective at delivering actives. Applied every night, consistently, it has been shown to reduce hair loss by up to 57% (Turmeric Peptide) after 90 days and increase hair density by 69% (Azuki Sprout) after 84 days. That said, you'll need to be consistent and apply it daily to achieve long-term results.

All of this comes in a formula with 99.9% natural ingredients, designed to support your hair from several fronts at once. What's more, because it contains no hormones or drugs like Minoxidil or Finasteride, this serum from the Hair Growth & Density range doesn't create dependency or a rebound effect when you stop using it. That's why it's suitable for everyone. Even during pregnancy, postpartum and breastfeeding.

Before and after with Hair Growth & Density Treatment

Through the Clinical Test we carried out with volunteers who used the Hair Growth & Density Treatment every night, we obtained the following results via a survey:

  • 70% show greater hair density after 90 days
  • 89% have less hair loss after 45 days
  • 93% think the product is easy to apply
  • 96% are satisfied with the product

This test involved men aged between 24 and 54 and women aged between 28 and 50.

Don't forget its ally: the shampoo

While the serum works in depth on the follicle, the shampoo takes care of the ground where it all happens: the scalp. The Hair Growth & Density Shampoo covers the topical hygiene area, providing a gentle cleanse that, far from being harsh, prepares the ground for the rest of the routine to work better.

Formulated without sulphates, without silicones, without microplastics and without parabens, with 99.8% naturally derived ingredients. This isn't a minor detail, since silicones can leave a film on hair that interferes with serum absorption. That's why choosing a silicone-free shampoo doesn't just clean better, it also boosts the treatment's effectiveness when used together.

Among its actives, it features the same Smart Growth Activator technology as the serum, along with Maca proteins and botanical extracts that help keep the scalp balanced and in optimal condition for the follicle to do its job.

The food supplement that strengthens your hair from within

If the serum works from the outside and the shampoo prepares the ground, one piece was still missing: strengthening your hair from within too. That's why the Hair Growth & Density range includes a food supplement that works on four internal fronts at once.

On the nutritional front, it provides cysteine, methionine and NAC —the amino acids that form keratin— along with zinc, selenium, iron and B-group vitamins, which contribute to the maintenance of normal hair. On the stress front, biotin and vitamin B6 strengthen your nervous system from within, complementing what the serum already does overnight. On the gut front, it adds a specific strain designed to care for your microbiota. And on the circulatory front, it incorporates oral AnaGain™ —up to 34% less hair loss at 28 days in a clinical study— along with astaxanthin and bamboo silica, strengthening from within the microcirculation that the serum already works on from the outside.

It's taken in drinkable form, every day on an empty stomach or after a light breakfast, in 28-day cycles. Try it and let us know what you think!

How long does the anti-hair-loss routine take to show results?

Consistency is key: from day 45 you'll notice hair loss starting to slow down, and between 90 and 120 days you'll see the best results in density and thickness. Also remember that hair loss is multifactorial: living a healthy lifestyle (eating well, exercising, getting enough rest…) helps your hair grow healthier and stronger.

Discover the Hair Growth & Density range and start caring for your hair naturally and safely today.

Great write up but no mention of how the product works
This is a good article in terms of explaining hair loss and the expected results of your product. You say it is natural and that there have been good outcomes. However, in amongst all this detail, your actual product is lost. Many of us are really searching for something that works, we know many of the reasons hair loss and so none of the detail you provide is a surprise. However, because we are looking for something natural we want to know a little about what is in the product you offer, is it organic, does it contain oils etc? In other words, we want to know about your product before we buy. This is missing here, which is a real shame. I am sure what you offer is great, but as a consumer I need a little more than a discussion of why hair falls out. Please, please provide this because a DHT blocking product which is natural is welcomed!

    Dry, curly hair
Hola! I have very long curly, dry hair that is prone to frizz. Maybe it's san age thing (I'm in my 40s), but it seems like I have less hair. While I'm not anemic, my iron levels drop every few months, so I'm sure that has had an effect on it. Anyway, thanks for the informative article (sorry, it's faster for me to write in English!) and I can't wait to try this product

    I hope it helps!
I´m so curious about this and I really need to try it! Can you apply it on a dry skin on the scalp?
    Freshly 26 Agosto 2021
Hi Ilse, thanks for asking! :D The Hair Growth & Density Treatment should be applied every night, fill a pipette (1 ml) and apply directly to the scalp. You can do it in sections. Massage your head to distribute the serum evenly, stimulate microcirculation and encourage total absorption. No need to rinse. We hope you enjoy it!
